A JUDGE has described the case of a smuggler who got caught trying to bring in 43 lizards in his underwear as the worst he has known.
Hans Kurt Kubus, 58, admitted trying to smuggle 43 lizards in his underwear and one in a sock out of New Zealand into Germany last December.
New Zealand Judge Colin Doherty said: "I don't think you necessarily came here to steal to sell, but I am sure the fact that you might have had excess was figured into your thinking."
He added that the incident was "pretty close to the worst case" he had known and sentenced Kubus to 14 weeks in prison, a NZ$5,000 (£2,180) fine and deportation back to Germany once he has left jail, The AP reports.
Department of Conservation prosecutor Mike Bodie had told Christchurch District Court that the affair was "the most serious case of its kind detected in New Zealand for a decade or more".
